Correct size selection therefore depends on the outside diameter of the actual cable, splice or terminal being covered.

Heat shrink tubing performs two practical jobs in a battery harness: electrical insulation and mechanical finishing. Around a crimped lug, soldered joint or wire splice, it can cover exposed conductive areas and reduce the chance of accidental contact with neighboring metal. Over a wire bundle, it can provide a smoother outer surface and help reduce movement between individual conductors.

Heating should be even and controlled. Excessive heat can damage cable insulation, soften nearby plastics, distort connector housings or overheat the underlying joint. Insufficient heating can leave loose sections that slide along the cable instead of forming a close fit. The sleeve should be allowed to cool fully before the harness is bent or pulled. In battery-pack work, neat insulation is not only cosmetic: cleanly finished joints make inspection easier and reduce the risk of stray metal contacting live conductors.

Select the 14mm tube by measuring the largest outside diameter that must pass through the unshrunk sleeve and the final diameter that must be gripped after heating. Check the actual roll or stock specification if a specific shrink ratio, wall thickness, adhesive lining, flame rating or material grade is required, because these characteristics vary across heat-shrink families.

Red tubing is commonly used to identify positive battery wiring, but color is only a visual aid. Polarity should always be verified with a meter before energizing a circuit. When used near lugs, busbars or high-current terminals, ensure the sleeve does not prevent proper mechanical seating or hide a loose connection that should remain inspectable.

Installation Guide

Slide the tubing onto the wire before completing any joint that would be too large to pass through the sleeve afterward. Position the tube so it fully covers the intended conductive area with suitable overlap onto intact insulation. Apply heat gradually while rotating or moving the heat source to avoid hot spots. Stop heating once the tube has formed evenly around the part. Allow it to cool before flexing the cable, then inspect the finished sleeve for gaps, burns, cuts or exposed conductor. Keep the heat source away from live batteries and flammable materials during installation.
